Un proyecto vitivinícola.
Viñedos Hermanos Hernáiz es un proyecto vitivinícola creado hace dos décadas por los hermanos Eduardo y Víctor Hernáiz que, a una velocidad vertiginosa, se ha posicionado como uno de los valores más destacados del panorama del vino nacional. Aunque para conocer la historia y de dónde nace el nombre de la bodega que dirigen hay que remontarse hasta 1878, cuando Eugenia de Montijo, esposa de Napoleón III y Emperatriz de Francia, fue premiada en la Exposición Universal de París al conquistar al jurado con un vino singular que se había elaborado en una finca de su propiedad, sita en Baños de Rioja.Es en esta finca donde se sustenta el proyecto actual de Viñedos Hermanos Hernáiz. Un pago sito entre las sierras de La Demanda y Cantabria, plantado a 570 m de altitud, que ha sido parcelado con precisión para dar mayor personalidad a cada una de las variedades de uva que los hermanos Hernáiz cultivan. Con estos mimbres, una enología de vanguardia y respetuosa con el terroir en su inmueble elaborador se pone al servicio de cada parcela para la vinificación de sus vinos. A través de rigurosos criterios, los hermanos Hernáiz realizaron la parcelación de las 101 hectáreas cultivadas en Viñedos Hermanos Hernáiz. Esto les facilita practicar una viticultura para elaborar los vinos en función de las características propias de cada parcela.
La excepcionalidad de los terruños.
La finca La Emperatriz es una de las escasas bodegas de Rioja que elaboran sus vinos de una misma y única propiedad vinícola, como es costumbre en el Médoc bordelés (otras bodegas riojanas con este mismo modelo son Remelluri, Valpiedra y Contino). Se trata de una finca de gran calidad cuyo potencial ya fue reconocido como dijimos anteriormente, en la Exposición Universal de París de 1878. En tal contexto, es bastante evidente que Doña Eugenia o sus asesores conocían perfectamente la excepcionalidad de estos terruños cuando ordenó cultivarlos: la calidad de sus suelos es sobresaliente y gozan de un microclima particular. Finca La Emperatriz se encuentra en Baños de Rioja, a 12 Km de Haro, en el extremo occidental de la DOC Rioja, lindando casi con la provincia de Burgos. Reúne un total de 101 Ha, divididas en la actualidad en 22 parcelas diferenciadas, situadas en una de las mesetas más elevadas de la Rioja Alta, donde el clima es más continental que en el resto de denominación, si bien atemperado por la influencia del Cantábrico, un microclima por lo general más seco y frío que se traduce en una fruta de excelente acidez y en unos vinos particularmente frescos. Los suelos están cubiertos por una capa de cantos rodados de 40 cm de grosor, que permite una adecuada insolación de los racimos, facilita un buen drenaje y confiere elegancia a los vinos.
Los vinos.
De la Emperatriz de Francia a los hermanos Eduardo y Víctor Hernáiz, sus actuales propietarios desde 1996, los vinos de Finca La Emperatriz han deleitado y siguen deleitando los paladares más variados, tanto con sus vinos de coupage clásico como con sus vinos de finca. La gama clásica la constituyen un Viura, un Crianza y un Reserva, y son el resultado de una mezcla de uvas de varias parcelas, elaborados con un estilo moderno que concede el protagonismo a la fruta, vinos versátiles y fáciles de maridar. Por su lado, Parcela Nº 1, Terruño, Garnacha Cepas Viejas y Viura Cepas Viejas son sus vinos de finca, la gama que concede prestigio al conjunto del proyecto, unos vinos con los que buscan ofrecer la expresión del carácter más específico del terruño. Todos ellos, vinos redondos, sabrosos y equilibrados, algunos especialmente elegantes y minerales, que merecen mucho la pena conocer.
