Un reformista.
Bodegas Palacio forma parte del limitado y selecto club de Bodegas Centenarias en la D.O. Ca. Rioja. Fundada en 1894 su afán de superación y liderazgo le ha llevado a convertirse en un referente en Rioja, o elaborando una amplia gama de vinos, con una acusada personalidad y posicionamiento diferenciado, avalados por numerosos premios en los principales concursos y revistas del sector. Bodegas Palacio es una de las firmas con más historia de Rioja Alavesa y una de las que mejor ha sabido adaptarse a los nuevos tiempos. Fue fundada en 1894 por Cosme Palacio y Bermejillo, un conocido empresario y político bilbaíno que llegó a ser diputado provincial y presidente de la Cámara de Comercio de la capital vizcaína, y sin pretenderlo, revolucionó totalmente el sector del vino riojano. Después de estudiar enología en Montpellier y de la mano del enólogo Domingo Garramiola, Cosme Palacio viajó a Valbuena de Duero para seguir experimentando.
El regreso.
Años después, Cosme Palacio volvió a Rioja dispuesto a aplicar las técnicas de elaboración bordelesas que había aprendido en Francia, mientras que Domingo se quedó en tierras vallisoletanas para hacerse cargo de una de las bodegas con más potencial de la zona: Vega Sicilia. Durante la década de los ochenta, Bodegas Palacio decidió llevar a cabo un proceso de modernización enológica de la mano del que ya era uno de los mejores enólogos del mundo: Michel Rolland. El francés fue el artífice de la creación de un nuevo tinto bautizado como el fundador de la bodega, Cosme Palacio, que se convirtió en el primer vino de autor que se elaboraba en Rioja y en un abanderado de los llamados tintos de "alta expresión". La adquisición de la firma por parte del potente grupo Hijos de Antonio Barceló en 1998 convirtió a Bodegas Palacio en una de las empresas más modernas del vino riojano.

En pleno corazón de la Rioja Alavesa, en Laguardia, una villa medieval amurallada con gran valor histórico, se encuentra Bodegas Palacio, rodeada de viñedos y con una ubicación privilegiada para el cultivo de la vid. Junto a ella, se encuentra la antigua Bodega donde hace más de 100 años Don Cosme Palacio comenzó a elaborar sus vinos, y que hoy se ha convertido en un pequeño y acogedor hotel. La calidad de los vinos de la zona donde está Bodegas Palacio se debe, en gran medida a las uvas que se desarrollan en los suelos arcillo-calcáreos de la Rioja Alavesa, suelos ideales para que las cepas regulen su demanda de humedad. La ubicación de los viñedos con orientación sur y protegidos de los vientos fríos del Norte por la Sierra de Cantabria, permite que la cepa aproveche el calor que necesita para la maduración del fruto. Entre los activos más importantes de Bodegas Palacio están los acuerdos a largo plazo con viticultores de la zona, que permiten un mayor control en todos los procesos de madurez y selección de uva garantizando así la máxima calidad año tras año.
