Varias generaciones como referente.
Bodegas Castaño es uno de los referentes en el sector vitivinícola mediterráneo y punta de lanza de la D.O. Yecla por su trayectoria y por sus logros con las variedades autóctonas de la zona, fundamentalmente con la monastrell. La relación de Ramón Castaño Santa con el mundo del vino se remonta a varias generaciones, tanto de viticultores como de elaboradores. En 1950, Ramón construyo una nueva bodega, actualizando los medios técnicos con los que contaba y ampliando los viñedos familiares. En 1975 adqurió sus primeras viñas en el paraje de “Las Gruesas”, pero no fue hasta 1980 cuando empezó a embotellar, una actitud que parecía demasiado atrevida en el entonces conservador mundo vinícola de Yecla. La incorporación paulatina de sus tres hijos - Ramón, Juan Pedro y Daniel - a la bodega familiar a lo largo de los 80, trajo un nuevo enfoque: afianzar los mercados nacionales y comenzar una etapa de expansión a mercados internacionales. En 2002 se construyó una nueva nave de almacenaje con 3.000 metros cuadrados en dos plantas climatizadas, que incluye un botellero con capacidad para 500.000 unidades en durmiente y una cámara de frío donde se lleva a cabo la maceración prefermentativa, mientras se sucedió en la adquisición de nuevos equipos de maceración, estabilización y vinificación.
La variedad Monastrell.
La variedad Monastrell se adapta perfectamente a las condiciones climáticas y orográficas de Yecla, ya que es capaz de aguantar las diferencias de temperatura, los veranos calurosos y los inviernos prolongados y fríos. Pero sobre todo es capaz de soportar períodos largos de sequía, en los que su desarrollo y producción descienden considerablemente. Es en las condiciones que ofrece la zona del Altiplano donde confluyen clima mediterráneo y continental, y donde la Monastrell aporta toda su estructura y suavidad, por lo que se puede afirmar que Yecla es uno de sus mejores hábitats. Actualmente, la bodega, cuenta con 600 hectáreas de viñedo, y comercializa en torno al 90% de su producción en el mercado internacional.
