Historia de la bodega.
Situada en el famoso enclave vinícola del Barrio de la Estación de Haro, Bodegas Bilbaínas es una de las firmas históricas y de referencia en Rioja. Su origen se remonta a 1859, cuando, huyendo de la plaga de la filoxera, la casa bordelesa Savignon Frères et Cie se estableció en Haro para elaborar y exportar vino a Francia. En 1901 un grupo de empresarios bilbaínos adquirió las instalaciones, construyendo además una nueva y monumental bodega con calados subterráneos. Así se constituye definitivamente la sociedad Bodegas Bilbaínas. En poco tiempo sus vinos ganaron reputación. Tanto es así que en 1925 esta casa fue distinguida con el título de Proveedor de la Real Casa y Patrimonio. En 1997 la bodega pasa a formar parte del Grupo Codorníu, realizando una profunda renovación de instalaciones y viñedos, y una puesta al día del estilo de sus vinos. Hoy día, Bodegas Bilbaínas cuenta con un viñedo en propiedad excepcionalmente extenso en La Rioja: 250 hectáreas distribuidas por el término de Haro, dentro de la subzona de la Rioja Alta; y cuenta con marcas de una solidez envidiable que abarcan diferentes estilos: Desde el más clásico Viña Pomal, a La Vicalanda (Alta Expresión) y el más moderno y juvenil Viña Zaco.
Historia de sus vinos.
La Vicalanda: Nace en 1994 procedente de cepas de tempranillo de más de 30 años de edad, localizadas en un enclave de excelentes características geoclimáticas y de suelos calcáreos y pedregosos, pobres, profundos y bien drenados. El cultivo del viñedo combina la larga tradición riojana con una viticultura más innovadora y una vinificación que reduce los periodos de crianza propios de la zona, aunque siempre superiores a los 12 meses y con un afinamiento en botella de como mínimo 24 meses. El resultado son un Reserva y un Gran Reserva, éste último sólo en años excepcionales, que responden al perfil de grandes vinos de La Rioja desde un estilo contemporáneo.
Viña Pomal: Plantado por primera vez a principios del siglo XX, el viñedo de Viña Pomal es hoy un pago de 120 has cuyas vides más antiguas se remontan a 1971. Combinando prácticas tradicionales junto a otras de una viticultura más avanzada, la bodega cultiva especialmente la variedad tempranillo, pero también otras como la graciano, la garnacha y la viura. Con esta materia prima y tras esmerados procesos de crianza en barrica bordelesa de roble americano, Viña Pomal ofrece unos de los vinos más fieles al estilo clásico de La Rioja.
Viña Zaco: Éste vino se remonta a 1918 y toma su nombre de uno de los viñedos más antiguos de Bodegas Bilbainas, donde crece la emblemática tempranillo de Rioja. Tras una crianza en barricas nuevas de roble americano durante un periodo de 6 a 12 meses, el resultado son unos vinos de característicos aromas florales, fresca acidez y taninos redondos. Con la variedad albariño originaria de Rías Baixas Viña Zaco elabora también un blanco monovarietal suntuoso y refrescante que combina su acidez con notas de minerales.
El grupo Codorníu.
Bodegas Bilbaínas pertenece al Grupo Codorníu, que cuenta con numerosos proyectos en otras denominaciones de España y el mundo, sumando más de 3.000 hectáreas de viñedo en propiedad: Masia Bach (Catalunya), Scala Dei (Priorat), Abadia de Poblet (Conca de Barberà), Raimat (Costers del Segre), Legaris (Ribera del Duero), Séptima (Mendoza, Argentina), Artesa (Napa Valley) y Nuviana (Valle del Cinca). Presente en los 5 continentes y con un equipo formado por más de 800 personas, sólo en los últimos años, el catálogo del Grupo Codorníu ha recibido más de 150 premios internacionales en vinos y cavas.
