Bodegas Avanthia se localiza en las laderas dominantes de pizarra de Valdeorras, muy por encima del río Sil. Nombrado así por la extensa extracción de oro que los romanos llevaron a cabo en esta área; esta localidad alberga el mejor terroir para cultivar dos de las uvas autóctonas más importantes de España: godello y mencía. Jorge Ordóñez fue el primer intermediario en introducir el godello en los Estados Unidos y, durante muchos años, fue el único comerciante que ofreció un vino elaborado con esta uva única. Bodegas Avanthia es la materialización del proyecto de Jorge con esta variedad como protagonista y produce los mejores vinos de godello de toda España. En 2016, Robert Parker, Jr. declaró que Avanthia era una de sus bodegas preferidas en España y escribió de ella: "Esta es una pequeña propiedad de aproximadamente 23 acres, cultivada en seco y con viticultura orgánica. Su especialidad es trabajar con la uva godello, que bien puede ser la uva blanca autóctona más fina de España. Tiene la textura de un Chardonnay, pero con notas crujientes, minerales y florales en sus aromas. Avanthia es sin duda el principal productor de este intrigante y delicioso blanco seco". Jorge también seleccionó la D.O. Valdeorras por sus condiciones únicas para el cultivo de la variedad mencía, la uva tinta más importante de Galicia. Una variedad que encuentra en este terroir una combinación ideal de suelos de pizarra, grandes alturas, viñas viejas y un clima más cálido en comparación con el resto de Galicia. Bodegas Avanthia forma parte de un grupo de bodegas dirigidas por Jorge Ordóñez, reconocido importador de vinos españoles en Estados Unidos.
Un sueño más de Jorge.
Bodegas Avancia es fruto del sueño de Jorge Ordoñez quien siempre había deseado tener su proyecto propio de Godello. Dirigido por el enólogo Nacho Álvarez, en pocos años ha conseguido afianzase como todo un referente dentro de las bodegas de la Denominación de Origen Valdeorras. La bodega se encuentra situada en la población de O Barco de Valdeorras en la provincia de Ourense. Los viñedos de cepas viejas de Godello por su parte se encuentran a unos 500 metros sobre el nivel de mar en el Valle del Sil situados en laderas en las terrazas de las montañas sobre suelos de pizarra y cuarzo. Las montañas protegen a las viñas y moderan la fuerte influencia climática del Atlántico. Bodegas Avancia elabora todos sus vinos de forma artesanal envejeciendo todos sus vinos en barricas de roble francés dando como resultado vinos elegantes, complejos y de marcado carácter gastronómico.
Nacho Alvarez es el encargado de dirigir todo el proyecto enológico de Bodegas Avancia. Está considerado como uno de los mejores enólogos de España y nombrado enólogo revelación por Robert Parker en 2015. Podemos decir que Nacho es un defensor de la viticultura artesanal y todo un experto en la recuperación de viñedos viejos.
