De los últimos en llegar.
De entre las bodegas más recientes de la Rioja, una de las más reconocidas es Abel Mendoza Monge. Esta pequeña bodega fue fundada el año 1988 en San Vicente de la Sonsierra, localidad de gran tradición vinícola. Si bien en sus inicios se dedicó a la producción de vinos tintos jóvenes, actualmente centra su producción en vinos con crianza. Dicho cambio de rumbo se produjo el año 1998 con el tinto Abel Mendoza Selección Personal 1998, criado durante once meses en barricas cuidadosamente seleccionadas de de roble francés, Nevers y Allier. Su producción fue sólo de 4.500 botellas. Sus viñas, un total 16 hectáreas, están situadas en el margen del Ebro, en terrenos accidentados y variados que combinan suelos arcillosos, margas y areniscas finas. Son viñas antiguas de 30 años de las variedades tempranillo y malvasía. El cultivo sigue métodos de agricultura biológica. Los vinos se comercializan bajo dos marcas: Jarrarte y Abel Mendoza. Todos ellos, de producción reducida y con una gran calidad, como los de la mayoría de bodegas de nueva cuña de la D.O. Rioja.
Historia de Abel Mendoza.
La bodega comenzó en 1988 y cuenta con 16 hectáreas de viñedo plantadas en diferentes parcelas en San Vicente de la Sonsierra. Fue a partir de 1992 cuando decidieron ampliar su gama de vinos a tintos con crianza y apostar por explorar los límites de algunas de las variedades blancas que habían sido denostadas hasta la fecha. La mayor importancia la confieren a sus viñedos que cuidan de una forma ecológica. Para Abel y Maite sus vinos deben ser el reflejo de su terroir.
Sus vinos.
Abel Mendoza, en lo que a sus vinos blancos se refiere, apuesta por trabajar sólo las uvas autóctonas blancas como el Torrontés, la Garnacha Blanca, el Tempranillo blanco, Malvasía o Viura. Todas ellas, partiendo de la base de un minucioso trabajo en el viñedo y su paso por barricas nuevas dan unos vinos complejos y muy singulares. Vinos como Abel Mendoza V5 o el vino Abel Mendoza Viura son un claro ejemplo. En cuanto a los tintos, destacaríamos el vino Jarrarte Maceración Carbónica elaborado de forma tradicional y el vino Abel Mendoza Grano a Grano Tempranillo que como su nombre indica se despalilla cada racimo de uva grano a grano, se hace una selección de los mejores granos y se elabora de una forma poco intervencionista. Abel Mendoza es un proyecto lleno de honestidad, de respeto por la agricultura, y ganas de reflejar en sus vinos el suelo de sus viñas, el clima de San Vicente y las variedades autóctonas que tradicionalmente se han trabajado en la zona.
