El gran descubrimiento.

También en el Bierzo la familia Palacios ha sabido encontrar los viñedos más escondidos y hacer vinos espléndidos. Artífices de la gran revolución que se está gestando en el Bierzo, el joven Ricardo Pérez Palacios, uno de los descendientes de la dinastía de los Palacios Remondo de La Rioja, y su tío Álvaro Palacios, uno de los gurús del Priorat, se embarcaron en la aventura de elaborar un gran vino en el Bierzo a partir de la autóctona variedad mencía. Y lo lograron. Comenzaron a elaborar en 1999 tras adquirir algunas hectáreas de viña y una pequeña bodega en Villafranca del Bierzo que ha sido restaurada. Elaboran sus vinos a partir de la uva mencía, procedente de un viñedo ubicado en un entorno privilegiado con 27 hectáreas repartidas en casi 200 parcelas, plantadas de cepas viejas de gran calidad y en suelos muy empinados, que Ricardo y Álvaro cultivan por métodos biodinámicos. Así obtienen vinos frescos, fragantes, jugosos y llenos de vida, fiel reflejo de la personalidad vitícola de las colinas del Bierzo.

El entorno paradisíaco.

Corullón es tierra de colinas, de laderas de pizarra antigua, tierra de monjes y peregrinos, a las puertas de Compostela y de uva mencía, un entorno privilegiado que Ricardo Pérez Palacios y Álvaro Palacios, descubrieron a finales de los 90. Una nueva bodega en la dinastía Palacios con un total de 27 ha. de viñedo, repartidas en casi 200 parcelas, plantadas de cepas viejas de gran calidad y en suelos muy empinados, que Ricardo y Álvaro cultivan por métodos biodinámicos, una disciplina que, según la bodega, "aúna lo orgánico y lo inmaterial en la búsqueda permanente de la definición y la pureza; un proceso en el que se conjugan el suelo y la planta, el trabajo de los hombres y el esfuerzo de los animales" y que les permite conseguir unos vinos frescos, fragantes, jugosos y llenos de vida, verdadero espejo de la personalidad vitícola de las colinas del Bierzo.

La mencía.

A menudo se hace referencia a la llegada al Bierzo de los Palacios —Álvaro es el enólogo español más mediático— como el punto de inflexión para el vino berciano. Efectivamente, 1999 es la fecha de partida para la nueva mencía. El momento clave. Fue entonces cuando Álvaro —avalado por la labor en la bodega familiar riojana Palacios Remondo y con el proyecto personal del Priorato ya en fase de gestación— y su sobrino recalaron en Villafranca, o más concretamente en Corullón, para explorar las posibilidades de la seductora mencía. Tras elevarla entre ambos a los altares de la enología internacional, una declaración lapidaria de Ricardo —«no vengo, estoy»— despejó cualquier duda sobre la eventualidad del proyecto berciano de la familia riojana con intereses diversificados, en todo caso siempre desarrollados bajo profundas y muy personales convicciones y un compromiso inequívoco con la tierra de adopción. En el caso de Pérez Palacios no es ya una obsesión, sino un modo de vida y de relación con el entorno tan íntimamente asumido que su universo vital y creativo se estrecha en torno a Villafranca del Bierzo como escenario exclusivo de la actividad elaboradora, viticultura aparte, claro, y de Corullón como aspiración y referencia permanente. En el proyecto vitivinícola que desarrolla Descendientes de J. Palacios tiene un peso determinante la mencía como base elaboradora, pero también el legado cultural e histórico de una tierra y de una viticultura precisa y sabia practicada sobre una uva tinta de estirpe atlántica que hereda el carácter cosmopolita y místico del Bierzo medieval. Más de doscientas pequeñas parcelas configuran el viñedo de esta nueva idea de bodega cuyo objetivo es concretar en el vino «la frescura y la fragancia, la jugosidad y la viveza» de la uva. La granja-escuela Cando, integrada en el proyecto, es un faro difusor de esos ideales a través de una intensa actividad relacionada con esas experiencias. Porque la actividad en Descendientes de J. Palacios va más allá de la viña y la bodega y afecta al aprovechamiento integral del medio. Pero, desarrollos conceptuales aparte, lo cierto es que los Palacios abanderan uno de los proyectos más sólidos en torno al vino berciano y sin duda el de mayores reconocimientos internacionales, vistos éstos desde la perspectivas de lo intangible —el elogio unánime de la crítica especializada— y de lo tangible, ya que la bodega exporta a los mercados más exigentes del mundo algo más del 60% de la producción. La venta exterior incluye, por supuesto, la comercialización de los tres o cuatro vinos más caros del Bierzo, aunque sea en unas cantidades muy limitadas por las exigencias de calidad autoimpuestas en la producción.
